Set in the Usangu Wetlands floodplains, this immersive seasonal camp - open from June to November each year - falls within Tanzania’s largest protected area, The Ruaha National Park. The park is known as a lion conservation unit, hosting a great number of Africa’s lions, and many other majestic beasts. Ruaha National Park is Tanzania's best-kept secret and the exceptional backdrop for The Usangu Expedition Camp.
Usangu, named after its Sangu inhabitants, is unrestricted rehabilitative land and allows for freedom to explore in the true bush wilderness, escorted by expert guides and professional rangers. Encounter a host of wildlife with predators such as the lion, cheetah, leopard, and endangered wild dog. Join the citizen science safari with the Tanzanian Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI) which researches the Usangu Wetlands to understand the ecosystem and how to protect the wildlife dependent on it.
You will also have a unique opportunity to engage with ongoing projects such as camera trap placings, wildlife tracking, and learning from experts in their field at the Douglas Bell Eco Research Station. After an exciting day contributing to data collection, experiencing close-up wildlife encounters, and collaborating with inspiring environmentalists, you can cool off in the hot springs before a wholesome evening meal at the campsite.
