In the Samburu language, ‘Loisaba’ is the name given to the Seven Sisters constellation of stars, which are best viewed in perfect safety from the serene comfort of your open-air ‘starbed’. The Loisaba Conservancy, in Kenya’s Laikipia Plateau, spans 56,000 acres and is yours to explore in search of a sizeable elephant population, agile predators like lion and leopard, and packs of endangered wild dogs. At night, snuggle into your ‘started’, which is rolled out of your suite onto a raised wooden platform, for a once-in-a-lifetime safari experience (you can, of course, also choose to sleep indoors).
In addition to day and night game drives in a custom-made open-side Land Rover, you can undertake nature walks with a qualified Samburu guide, saddle up to go horse riding among giraffes and zebra, or go lion tracking with Loisaba’s conservationists. On other days, you may find yourself traversing the conservancy by camel or mountain bike, or dropping in at the anti-poaching unit and learning how their intelligent and brave canine units has had major success with trained sniffer dogs.
Perfect as a honeymoon destination for an adventurous couple, the Loisaba Starbeds are one of East Africa’s most unusual lodges and have only four different suites available, all overlooking part of the Eastern Valleys and the Kiboko waterhole.
Highlights
Activities
Nodding off under the African night sky and waking up to the most spectacular views of the bush at sunrise - Safari bliss as far as I’m concerned. Hugely popular with honeymooners and families alike, Starbeds will be a highlight of your time in Kenya. Little-known Loisaba is well kept secret where those “in the know” return over and over again – a must for the intrepid safari traveler looking for an unusual experience, off the beaten path and unique in Kenya.
