Located in Zimbabwe's flagship Hwange National Park, Little Makalolo is discreetly tucked away in a teak forest and overlooks a waterhole that sees a regular procession of animals coming down to drink. The focus here is firmly on wildlife: you will be urged to try the different viewing hides - including one overlooking the camp's waterhole - for great game and bird viewing as well as excellent photographic opportunities.
At Little Makalolo, your game viewing starts on your doorstep. Morning and afternoon game drives in open 4x4s and walks with an armed guide are all part of the experience, and you can expect to see large antelope herds, closely followed by their predators, as well as classic large game species such as elephant, giraffe, and buffalo. Birdlife is also abundant in the area with over 400 species recorded.
Highlights
Activities
One of Hwange's best. Little Makalolo is the perfect camp to switch off and be present on your holiday. The social evening boma fire and warmth of the lodge are true highlights with a team of guides and staff who are passionate about and generous in sharing their knowledge and hospitality.
Rooms
Standard Twin Tent
Little Makalolo’s traditional-style tents are spacious with warm and homely interiors. Each tent features a private veranda on which to sit and watch animals drink at the waterhole. Solar power is used for the lights and to heat water, and the beautiful copper-accented bathrooms are en suite with indoor and outdoor showers.
Facilities
Congregate around the campfire for a pre-dawn breakfast before your game drive and again for drinks - and perhaps stories from the day this time - in the evening.
There is also a refreshing swimming pool in the camp to cool off in between safari activities. The dining room and lounge at Little Makalolo are all built under canvas and overlook the teeming waterhole, making game viewing both easy and comfortable.
Dining
Wake up to a light and delicious breakfast before embarking on an early morning game drive.
A hearty lunch follows your return to camp, followed in turn by an indulgent afternoon tea, served before your afternoon safari activity.
Dinner is enjoyed around a large table in the tented dining room overlooking the waterhole or out under the stars.
