Okahirongo Elephant Lodge is set in one of Namibia's most remote destinations: the Purros Conservancy in the dramatic Kaokoland area, deep in far north Namibia and home to the striking and enigmatic Himba people. The uniquely designed terracotta lodge and cottages are decorated in a rich and sensuous fusion of pastel colours with ethnic touches and locally carved furnishing adding to the ambience.
Take in the spectacular wrap-around views of the river bed, stark desert scenery and distant purple mountains but the highlight of your stay will be venturing out into the wild desert on professionally guided morning and afternoon nature drives in open 4x4 vehicles in search of unique desert animals. Night drives under spectacular starry skies, early morning desert walks and cultural visits to the local Himba village are also memorable experiences. Okahirongo Elephant Lodge works closely with the Desert Lion Project to conserve Namibia's beautiful and uniquely desert-adapted big cats.
Highlights
Activities
This lodge is situated in what is often called the last truly wild area in Namibia. Here you can expect to see the desert-adapted elephant, the only place in the world to see it. The lodge is in the Purros Conservancy a no-risk malaria area. Enjoy a siesta in your private gazebo with a day bed, or laze around the pool. This lodge offers a luxury, desert experience.
Rooms
Suite
Okahirongo Elephant Lodge has an exclusive number of well-appointed suites and may be one of the most unique places you will ever stay. All have four-poster beds and feature a private terrace, with a covered day bed, that looks out across the desert. Bathrooms come with both indoor and open-air showers. The colours and textures echo the landscape, and the dramatic dome architecture featured throughout the lodge is styled like a signature Himba home.
Facilities
Linked by wooden walkways, the open-sided lounge areas, library and dining areas allow the soft breezes to drift over you as you relax with magnificent desert views. Spend your time between game drives lazing around the infinity pool, reading a book in the cool comfort of the library or just relaxing in the shade of your shaded day beds.
Dining
The menu at Okahirongo Elephant Lodge changes daily and serves a delicious fusion of Italian and African cuisine with much of the fresh produce coming from the lodge's organic garden. In the evening, enjoy dinner by candlelight in one of the two airy dining rooms, on the terrace by the pool or under the African night sky around a log fire in the traditional African boma.
