Elephant Pepper Camp is a traditional bush safari camp shaded by a natural forest of ebony and elephant pepper trees, overlooking the Mara plains. Set away from other lodges, the camp offers modern comforts, evenings by the campfire, and dinner under the stars.
The spectacular annual migration of wildebeest and zebra is by no means the only feature of this World Heritage Site. The Masai Mara is home to enormous herds of plains game, big cats, and elephants as well as colorful birds, small game, riverine wildlife, and beautiful scenery. Daily extended game drives in open-sided vehicles and guided bush walks make up your thrilling game-viewing experiences. The camp lies within a private conservancy meaning you have access to the greater Mara but also exclusive areas with limited access for other vehicles, meaning visitor density is low.
Elephant Pepper is unfenced (although there are 24-hour patrols by Maasai moran or 'warriors') and the game is often spotted in camp. It is closed during the annual 'long rains' season from April to May. It is a delightful combination of a classic safari camp - think comfortable hammocks under the trees and polished brass lanterns - as well as mod cons like plumbed showers and Wi-Fi. Cuisine is inspired by Italy and lazy meals take place at a long table in the mess tent.
Highlights
Activities
An intimate luxury tented camp in the heart of the Mara North Conservancy with beautiful tents and gourmet food as well as superb game viewing. Enjoy the Wildebeest Migration in a season that’s away from the crowds.
Rooms
Safari Tent
Elephant Pepper Camp has eight very spacious canvas tents with en suite dressing rooms and bathrooms. Each tent has a view of the Masai Mara plains and the wildlife that saunters past.
There are two large honeymoon or family tents available, both of which feature private pit fireplaces for evenings under the stars and areas for private dining.
The little extras set Elephant Pepper Camp apart. There are hammocks strung between the shady trees, hot-water bottles waiting in bed at night, and tasteful touches of Kenya like traditional kikois (wraps or sarongs) and beaded accents. The tents have substantial brass fittings from India, including brass basins in the bathroom and brass ashtrays in the form of a lion's paw print.
Facilities
Set out on game drives in open-sided vehicles, as well as guided bush walks, to see herds of plains game, big cats, elephants, and plentiful bird species.
Before dinner, enjoy a drink around the campfire where you can share stories of the day’s sightings. There is a small library and the more energetic and competitive can play croquet outside the mess tent.
Wi-Fi is available during certain times in the communal areas. Elephant Pepper Camp is solar-powered although there is a backup generator.
Dining
Meals at Elephant Pepper Camp are prepared by chefs trained by the owner's family and feature traditional northern Italian recipes blended with international and local favorites.
The main dining tent offers family-style dining with a self-service bar or enjoy bush breakfasts, sundowners, or a barbecue beside the campfire.
Dishes include homemade pasta, fresh salads, and pork spare ribs or beef fillet served with roast potatoes, topped off with excellent cheese from Brown's in Nairobi, and cheesecake.
