Sheltered by ancient ebony trees and set on the banks of the lush Xakanaxa (pronounced ‘ka-ka-na-ka’) lagoon in the pristine wetland of the Okavango Delta, Camp Moremi provides a true ‘get away from it all’ safari experience. With only 11 East African-style safari tents (and one family tent) and located in the heart of the Moremi Game Reserve, Camp Moremi is ideal for those keen on ‘unplugging’ from modern communications but who still want some 21st-century creature comforts.
‘Water safaris’ by boat allow you to go in search of hippos, elephants and waterfowl and are an excellent way of understanding this vast and fragile ecosystem (the water here is too deep to use mekoro). Back at Camp Moremi, tuck into their famous homemade bread at lunch and then take to your viewing deck with a book and binoculars – or to your king-sized bed for a lazy siesta.
With a beautiful setting, comfortable accommodations and attentive staff, Camp Moremi is an excellent introduction to the lifeblood of Botswana.
Highlights
Activities
Camp Moremi is a lovely, 4-star lodge that will offer you an affordable and comfortable stay with a great experience of the Moremi Game Reserve. The staff are one of the highlights at the lodge, especially when they sing before dinner. I thoroughly enjoyed the sunset cruise on the lagoon as well as sundowners on the deck overlooking the water.
Rooms
Standard Tent
Camp Moremi accommodates a maximum of 24 guests in East African-style safari tents, which are individually set on raised teak platforms with a private verandah.
The tents are simply yet elegantly furnished with African teak furniture and colourful woven rugs. Large gauze windows allow cooling breezes in but keep insects out, and an electric fan keeps the air fresh and cool in the evenings.
The en suite bathrooms adjacent to the tents feature double vanities, a flush toilet, signature amenities and a blissful hot shower.
There is one family tent that has two adjoined bedrooms.
Facilities
Artfully constructed from thatch and wood, the elevated Moremi Tree Lodge is the focal point of the camp and houses the main lounge, a wildlife reference library, a dining area and a cocktail bar, all shaded by giant ebony trees with a deck overlooking the lagoon. A wooden walkway leads to the secluded pool area, perfect for a refreshing swim in the afternoons between game drives.
Dining
The delicious early breakfast and mid-morning brunch buffets are served in the thatched boma area. A selection of fresh salads and seasonal fruits are complimented by a mouth-watering array of hot and cold dishes that change daily. Game drive hampers include snacks to be enjoyed in the wilds, and afternoon tea features a tempting choice of sweet and savoury delicacies. Candlelit dinners are served in the cosy atmosphere of the Moremi Tree Lodge, where you are serenaded by the grunts of hippos and the chirping reed frogs in the lagoon below.
