Somalisa Expeditions is nestled among a grove of acacia trees deep in Hwange National Park, within a private concession along the park’s game-rich Kennedy Vlei Line, an area that includes a ‘fossil river’ and the seasonal Somalisa Pans. The camp captures the feel of the original safari adventurers and the first tented camps of the early 20th century for a unique and authentic safari experience.
Hwange’s famously populous elephants meander past the camp at all hours of the day, drinking from a waterhole right in front of a raised deck where you can photograph and observe them in their natural habitat. Watch how the babies pick up speed the minute they scent the water, trotting along excitedly while the adults keep watch and bring up the rear (the adults also form a protective phalanx around the little ones as they drink, keeping them safe from lurking predators).
Somalisa Expeditions consists of six Meru-style tents, each built on a wooden platform with en suite bathrooms and exceptional views of the Zimbabwean bush from their private verandas. Various activities are offered, including guided hikes, pre-arranged village visits in a private vehicle, and dawn-and-dusk game drives for sightings of elephants, lions, giraffes, leopards, hyenas, and many more.
Highlights
Activities
Experience the incredible wildlife of Hwange at this authentic bush camp with touches of a bygone area but all the comforts of a modern camp. A sleepout in Ray’s Pan is a must when visiting Somailsa
Rooms
Standard Tent
Spacious and beautifully furnished in contemporary African art and craft, each Meru-
style tent also has a large en-suite bathroom made of wood with showers and a loo.
There is no roof, but the high wooden walls ensure total privacy as you shower to
the sound of the wilderness all around you.
Facilities
The large main tented area at Somalisa Expeditions has both solar and generator power, with battery-charging facilities for all your devices. The comfortable lounge area features a cozy fireplace and a bar that walks out into the camp's boma. The pièce de résistance of the boma is the raised wooden deck that is built right in front of a waterhole (also known as ‘the elephant bar’) – a fantastic spot where you can sit back in a sun lounger and just observe herds of elephant come to slake their thirst.
Dining
Homestyle bush meals are a specialty at Somalisa Expeditions. Dinners are usually enjoyed in a communal dining area around a beautiful hardwood table, while breakfasts are served around a crackling campfire in the middle of the boma surrounded by nature. Snacks and drinks are also served en route while game driving, especially the ever-popular sundowners at a scenic spot.
