Situated on the confluence of the Mara and Talek Rivers in the Masai Mara, Mara Ngenche Safari Camp offers an old-world safari ambiance combined with beautiful views over a popular hippo pool. With just 10 tents, Mara Ngenche allows a handful of guests to experience Kenya at its very best. The Great Migration, when thousands upon thousands of wildebeest and other game cross the savannah on an annual journey in search of fresh grazing and water supplies, is considered one of the top natural wonders of the world. At Mara Ngenche, a dedicated guide for your stay and a flexible daily program allow unfettered access to this thunderous display. Outside the Migration season, there is still a multitude of resident games in the area, including the Big Cats and Big 5. Highlights
Activities
I love the location of this intimate luxury camp – right on the confluence of the Talek and Mara Rivers. This part of the Masai Mara offers excellent year-round game viewing and if river crossings are high on your safari wish list then Mara Ngenche is one of my top choices for peak migration season. With just a handful of tents, one is assured of a private and exclusive African bush experience.
Rooms
Tent
Mara Ngenche Safari Camp is small, maximizing the ambiance of being alone in the wilderness, like the explorers of old. There are just 10 tents, keeping guests to small parties at any one time. The tents are bug-proof and each has either a 4-poster, king-sized bed, or twin bed with a 180° view of the Mara River. Each also has an en suite bathroom, with dual basins, hot and cold running water, a flush toilet, a bathtub, and an outside shower with a view. Each tent also has a verandah and private plunge pool and is partially enclosed in its boma.
Facilities
Facilities are kept to a minimum at Mara Ngenche Safari Camp, allowing the full focus to be on the wild animals. Being at the confluence of two rivers, with decks overlooking the waters, there is a constant parade of animals to view from every point in camp. The camp is unfenced but you are kept secure by alert Masaai warriors. They are also your highly trained guides and spotters on your game drives, facilitated by open-sided 4x4 vehicles, and will share their knowledge of the area during the day and entertain you at night. Each tent has its private plunge pool, while there is a social area with a lounge, bar, and dining area.
Dining
Breakfast and lunch are served alfresco under the trees; dinner is a 4-course affair served in the mess tent, although private dining can be arranged on your verandah or under the stars. The communal dining and lounge area is open to the river, allowing you to watch the hippos and crocs while you eat or enjoy a welcome cool drink. Food is continental but incorporates local flavors, all served by attentive and friendly Masaai staff. After dinner, indulge in the time-honored safari tradition of drinks and stories around the campfire before retiring to your tent, serenaded by the night sounds.
