The quirky and comfortable Kwessi Dunes Lodge combines all the best bits of old- and new-world African elements. High thatched roofs and vintage maps meet swinging hammocks and striped canvas in each of the ten chalets. Found in the striking desert landscape of the NamibRand National Reserve and within arms-reach of the famous Sossusvlei, you’re able to explore the vast area by hot-air balloon, quad bike, on foot, horseback, or in a classic safari vehicle.
Located deep within NamibRand, Kwessi Dunes places its focus not on chasing after big game, but on appreciating the unconventional beauty that the sprawling desert plains, jagged mountains, and iconic red dunes have to offer. The harsh climate here has produced some interesting wildlife. Spot unusual creatures like the bat-eared fox as well as antelope, African wild cats, and even the odd leopard and cheetah, all of which have adapted to survive in these unforgiving conditions.
Kwessi’s biggest drawcard is its prime location for stargazing. The NamibRand is the only Dark Sky Reserve in Africa. It possesses an exceptional quality of starry nights and a nocturnal environment and is one of the least light-polluted areas in the world. The night sky is otherworldly, affording a view of the Milky Way Galaxy that can be found in only a handful of other places around the globe. Each chalet at the lodge features a separate stargazer room where guests can fall asleep under a canopy of stars.

Twin Room
Ten thatch-and-canvas chalets blend old- and new-world Africa, with a quirky twist. Vintage four-poster beds and old maps meet striped canvas and swinging hammocks. Hot desert days and cool nights are kept at bay by the high thatched ceilings and air conditioning that keep the room at an optimal temperature. There’s nothing better than starting or ending the day off with a nice shower. The chalet’s en suite features an indoor and outdoor shower for when you want to rinse off under thatch or out in nature. The shaded veranda also provides a great spot to sit and soak in the surrounding desert vistas.
The highlight is the separate ‘stargazer’ room at the back of each chalet. Enjoy a night of staring as you’re lulled into a peaceful night’s sleep on your four-poster bed. Being the only Dark Sky Reserve in Africa, NamibRand is one of the least light-polluted areas in the world, affording the most spectacular view of the star-filled night sky.
Facilities
Constructed on a raised wooden deck and topped with a high thatched roof, Kwessi Dune’s main building comprises traditional African elements to emphasize the feel of an authentic safari. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors provide an uninterrupted view of the striking NamibRand landscape, folding back to invite nature in. The cool and comfortable area is a great place to mingle with other guests and to unwind from a day of game drives. Escape the desert heat with a soak in the swimming pool which overlooks a popular waterhole visited regularly by oryx and zebra. Once the sun starts to set and the evening chill begins to creep up, grab a drink from the well-stocked bar before curling up on the plush sofa and enjoying a good book from the small library. Better yet, head outside to the fire pit and swap stories over the warm glow of the flames.
